Choosing the right yarn for your crochet project can be difficult if you are new to crochet. Today, I want to share with you how I choose my yarn and the reason behind it. If you want to watch a video instead of reading, you can do it. ⇟⇟⇟
By the way, I am only sharing with you my point of view feel free to share with me your opinion in the comment below.
How I choose the right yarn for my crochet project depends on the design I am working on and the hook I will be using. For me, I love working with DK weight yarn, and the yarn you see here is Fingering weight, so I doubled strands (held together) to get the thickness that close to DK weight yarn.

Let’s talk about gauge swatch!
If you are here for a while you will know that I mentioned the word “Gauge Swatch” many times. A gauge swatch is like the language for crocheters to communicate. As a designer gauge swatch helps me to calculate different sizes for my design. And without the gauge swatch, it is IMPOSSIBLE to grade the pattern. Learn about gauge watch. ⇟⇟⇟
Make many swatches with different hook sizes.
The way to know which yarn and hook are best for your project is to make lots of swatches! Making many swatches help you get familiar with the yarn and the hook that work best together. Remember, the design/stitch you choose will turn out different when using different hook sizes. If you want to make something that soft and flowy, you will need to use a bigger hook size than what the yarn label suggested. How big that you need to try by making many swatches.
What about the combination of colors?
I think there is no rule on this part. For me, I go with the feeling I have at the moment. I usually choose the colors from what I saw in nature, but I am quite flexible when choosing the colors. Sometimes, I would mix a totally different theme, and many times I want to keep the same shade throughout the piece. I would say, play around and see how you like or don’t like it and why? I think it’s such a fun journey to allow yourself to play with the project you are working on, knowing that you can always undo and redoing it again if you change your mind on the colors.
