YARN
For this project, I choose to work with fingering weight yarn. I doubled the strands to have the thickness I want. The yarn I used is hand-dyed yarn from EFA. You can read more about this yarn here.
I got 2 packs of the kit and I still have so much left that I am designing a shawl/wrap to wear with this sweater.

Why do I think this is an easy crochet sweater?
The pattern on the yoke part is made out of 2 stitches only and the entire piece is a half double crochet. And you know what? You can make it a tunic length by continuing the stitch to the length you desire. In fact, you can even make a maxi dress out of it. Now you got it right why it is an easy crochet sweater 🙂

Gauge swatch
17.6 hdc x 18rows = 4″ × 4″
What I need you to to know:
17.6 hdc = 4” meaning 1” = 4.4hdc
4.4hdc x 19” = 83.6 → I take 84 for my starting ch for size small which is the size I demonstrate in this pattern.
Abbreviation US terms
ch = chain
Dc = double crochet
Fphdc = Front post half double crochet
Bphdc = Back post half double crochet
sl st = slip stitch
sl kn = slip knot
st/sts = stitch/stitches
1st = 1 stitch
sk = skip
rep = repeat
beg = beginning round
rnd/rnds = round/rounds
INC = increase
DEC = decrease
RS = right side
Note: The beginning ch, if not stated as a stitch, is simply meant to build up the yarn.

Sizes | Shoulder to shoulder | Fullest Bust |
S | 14½ -15 | 34 |
M | 15½ -16 | 36-38 |
L | 16½ -17 | 40-42 |

3XL | 18 | 52-54 |
4XL | 18½ | 56-58 |
5XL | 18½ | 60-62 |
How to choose the right size to follow?
Example:
- When shoulder to shoulder measures 17” and the fullest bust is 36” follow the pattern M38
- When shoulder to shoulder measures 16½” and the fullest bust is 39” follow the pattern L40
The sample is worked in a size Small (S). Model’s measurement: Shoulder to shoulder 14½”, Bust 34”
Note:
- Armhole circumference numbers do not include the underarm ch.
- Green color = Width measurement (1,2,3,4) Orange color = Length measurement (5,6,7)
Colors code: R = Red, S = Sage, B = Brown, Bl = Blue, G = Green
Rnd1 – Rnd4 = R
Rnd5 until the last Rnd of yoke = Switching between S & R
The pattern is worked in the round.
The starting ch needs to be a multiple of 2

Rnd1 – hdc in each st across, last st at the st marker, ch 20, hdc where the st marker at the front, hdc in each st across, last st at the st marker, ch 20, hdc in each st across, sl st in the first hdc. A total of 140sts.
Rnd2 – hdc in each st across, sl st in the first hdc. A total of 140hdc.
Rnd3 rep Rnd2
NO MORE SL ST FROM NOW ON
Rnd4 – hdc in each st across. A total of 140hdc.
Rep Rnd4 until you get to the waistline.
I have made a total of 19rnds of 140hdc.
ON THE WAISTLINE PART IS VERY INDIVIDUAL you can continue the body part of your sweater without shaping it or use the method below to make the DEC.
The reason I have not pre calculated this part for you is because our body measurements on this part vary. Some have a large bust and small waist and vice versa.
Calculation guideline:
My waistline is 28” and the body on rnd19 measures 31”, I want to DEC about 2” (29”) so I have enough room to move and the sweater is not too tight on the body.
2” = 8.8hdc → I converted to 9hdc. So I will be DEC on rnd20 = 5hdc, and rnd23 = 4hdc.
Where to make the DEC?
- Take the total number of hdc ÷ with the total DEC sts you want.
Example: 140(hdc) ÷ 5(hdc) = 28, so I will be DEC 1st in every 28th st.
- WATCH out! In rnd23 my number is 135(hdc) ÷ 4(hdc) = 33.75, you will take number 32 instead. ANYTHING THAT COMES WITH dot (.) subtract 1 stitch.
From Rnd20 – Rnd36 color B
Rnd20 (DEC) – hdc in each st across, DEC 1st in every 28th st, 5hdc deducted. A total of 135hdc.
Rnd21 & Rnd22 – hdc in each st across. A total of 135hdc.
Rnd23 (DEC) – hdc in each st across, DEC 1st in every 32th st, 4hdc deducted. A total of 131hdc.
Rnd24 – Rnd36 hdc in each st across. A total of 131hdc = 29”
I will INC 5½” from 29” to 34½” because the beginning of my hip measures 34”.
34½” will be comfortable for me. Please follow the method of how to INC to make your sweater fit you.
Where to make INC?
- Take the total number of hdc ÷ with the total INC sts you want.
Example: 131(hdc) ÷ 5(hdc) = 26.2 so I will be INC 1st in every 26th st.
From Rnd37 – Rnd52 + The edge = Color Bl
Rnd37 (INC) – hdc in each st across, INC 1st in every 26th st, 5hdc added. A total of 136hdc.
Rnd38 & Rnd40 – hdc in each st across. A total of 136hdc.
Rnd41 (INC) – hdc in each st across, INC 1st in every 34th st, 4hdc added. A total of 140hdc = 31”
Rnd42 – Rnd44 – hdc in each st across. A total of 140hdc.
Rnd45 (INC) – hdc in each st across, INC 1st in every 17th st, 8hdc added. A total of 148hdc = 33”
Rnd46 – Rnd48 – hdc in each st across. A total of 148hdc.
Rnd49 (INC) – hdc in each st across, INC 1st in every 37th st, 4hdc added. A total of 152hdc = 34½”
Rnd50 – Rnd52 – hdc in each st across. A total of 152hdc.

RS Sleeve at the armpit
It’s important that your rnd1 of the sleeve has the same stitch count of Armhole + Underarm ch.
Example: Size S = 47 + 20 = 67 hdc
If you have more sts in rnd1, you need to DEC to have the matching number of the math above.
Colors
Rnd1 = S
From rnd2 – rnd15 = color R
From rnd16 – rnd39 = color B
From rnd40 – rnd74 + The edge = color Bl
Rnd1 (possible to DEC) – sl kn, ch2, hdc across, make sure you have the same stitch count of Armhole + Underarm ch. A total of 67hdc, sl st in 2nd ch from beg.
From now on NO SL ST at the end of the rnd.
Rnd2 – Rnd24 hdc in each st across. A total of 67hdc.
DEC 1st in every 3rnds
Rnd25 (DEC 1st) – a total of 66hdc
