From the look of this Yemanjá Poncho, many of you thought this is the difficult one to make.
Learn how to do it here ⇟⇟⇟
Well, it’s not that difficult. But you need to be able to do simple math right at the gecko. This pattern’s formula is the heart of this piece if you want to have the same look. And then you will need to pay attention when you are working on it. It is not the piece to have your eyes on NetFlix all the time. Instead, you will need to focus even though you repeat the same thing over and over again.
Why it took me so long to finish it?
I started this piece over a year ago, and I lost interest in finishing it. It felt like something has died during the process of making it. Just to found out later on that my creativity pretty much connected with the season. So if this happened to you with the same or different reason, don’t blame yourself or even think that you are not a good designer because this could happen to anyone. And even if you have to undo all of it and a week later you found yourself redoing it back again, then see it as the journey and there perhaps one or two lessons for you to learn.
The construction.
So this piece is just two panels of rectangle connected. I believe you have made many of 2 rectangle panels poncho at least once in your lifetime. If not, never mind!
The off-shoulder look happens without plan!
Seriously, when I connected both panels, I found out that it was a bit too wide and so I come up with these little bridges for both sides. The unexpected surprise is the beauty of the journey of creating/designing each piece to life. I feel like each piece of my work never ceases to amaze me. Sometimes what you thought its an error turn out to be the highlight of it all.
I also think the unique part of this creation is the chains and the shell stitches which made this piece the symbol of the Sea! YAMANJÁ!
Watch the video below and see how it flows like the ocean and the tide while I was dancing.
Where the inspiration come from?
I saw my favorite artist/singer wear her dress/poncho (not crochet)on the stage for her concert while singing my favorite song. Her dress looks like a summer cotton dress/poncho. The length of it was over the knees. At the minute I saw it, I start to do the math about the chains and stuff. It was pretty clear in my mind how I’m going to do it. It’s was the only design that I come up with the structure pretty fast as if the seed has already planted in my head, and I know how to do it! I just know! Sounds weird, right! I know! Bare with me, ok, it will get even more bizarre in the coming post about my journey of designing, I promised! 😜😂
What yarn is best for this project?
I would say any cotton yarn would make this piece beautiful. But my favorite is Ultra Pima cotton yarn from Cascade. I received this yarn directly from Cascade warehouse as they are one of my yarn sponsor companies; if you want to learn more about how to work with brands and need my support, you can find more info here.
- Any Dk weight/#3 Ultra Pima cotton yarn from Cascade I used 1,400 yards for my size XS
- Hook 3.5mm
- Tape measurement
- Stitch markers
- Yarn needle & scissors
Tips:
- When working on this piece make sure to get the formula right at the beginning. Watch the video above slowly and note everything down.
- Be patient it is not the fast-food creation. In fact, it’s a real restaurant kind of food that you don’t want to be in the rush.
- Block your work after you finished. Watch the video below on how I block my crochet work.
